Kelly and Jacob’s Winter Wedding at The Lodge at Breckenridge

Kelly and Jacob had a beautiful winter wedding near Breckenridge, Colorado on one of the coldest days in all of 2022. On my way to meet them at the AirBnB they were getting ready at, I stopped at Boreas Pass to see what the snow conditions were for portraits. It was -13ºF outside, and my hair froze as soon as I got out of my vehicle. I believe the high for the day was around -3º.

Kelly and Jacob both got ready surrounded by their family and friends in AirBnBs located just a few minutes from their venue. One of my favorite parts about larger getting ready rooms and having all your people join you during that time is the ability to capture some really great storytelling moments. I’m sure that I’ve said it at every wedding that I’ve photographed – but the best way to get amazing (and truly candid) photographs is the “I’m not here” mantra. Just pretend I’m not shoving a giant camera into your face, starting when you’re in your pajamas ;). But in all seriousness, enjoy your time getting ready with your people – whomever they may be. Take photos of one another, laugh, help eachother get dressed. It’s some great time spent with one another.

I met Kelly and Jacob through a mutual (and amazing) fellow photographer, Amanda. She was a bridesmaid in the bunch and had recommended me to Kelly due to both of us having a love for the outdoors and similar personalities. I’d say she hit the mark – I absolutely LOVED spending the day with Kelly and Jacob.

For their first look, we had settled on heading up the hill to Sapphire Point nestled between Breckenridge and Keystone. The road to Sapphire is paved (barring extreme weather) and it’s an easily accessible place. And when it’s below 0º outside, you have close access to the vehicles and a heat source.

After some photos of the two of them and with the bridal party, we headed down the hill and to the Lodge to meet the groomsmen and family for some portraits.

When it comes to adverse weather – I am game for anything that doesn’t put our lives or wellbeing at serious risk. That includes hosting your ceremony outdoors in below 0º weather – bring it on! I’ve got my Indyeva coat that’s rated for the coldest of days.

In what may have been one of the fastest ceremonies – in the name of all their guests sake of course – Kelly and Jacob said I Do and rushed back inside. As did the rest of us.

For the rest of the evening – there were toasts, some tears shed, and lots of dancing. Especially the flower girls – they even put together an on-the-spot choreographed dace to show everyone.

Ending our time together – we stepped outside for a few star shots overlooking the Ten Mile Range. I LOVE night shots, and they’re one of my favorite ways for us to take a minute to get that one last photo then have you head to finish your time with your guests.

Thanks again for inviting me to celebrate with you and your loved ones!

Cheers –
